Caldo Tlalpeno

Winter Comfort Food

Just like we have stews, soups and chowder here in the USA, there are many hearty and satisfying Mexican dishes that are great to keep you warm, full and nourished during the long winters. And although extremely cold winters are usually limited to Northern Mexico, we enjoy our Winter Comfort Food country-wide.

Enter, for instance, these heartening Caldos. Caldos are a kind of soup which liquid base is mostly broth, either beef, like is the case with this Caldo de Olla, chock-full of meat and veggies, or this very appetizing Delicious and Healthy Caldo Tlalpeño which counts among its ingredients plenty of chicken, chickpeas and other veggies and really takes the prize with a final touch of chipotle. Caldos will bring you back to life in cold days, guaranteed.

Of course, Pozoles are our quintessential Winter Comfort Food. They take center stage and are second to none flavor-wise when it’s that time of the year. I have mentioned before that there are green, red and even white Pozoles. The main ingredients run the gamut from pork to vegetarian. The good news is that you can pull off a delicious and really fast pozole in no time. If you have any shredded chicken or pork meat and a big can of hominy, you’re good to go. Try this Lightning-Fast Chicken Pozole. Or this Green Posole that you can make with that leftover turkey sitting in everyone’s freezer limbo right now, or you can use pork or chicken instead. The choice is yours.

If you like your food spicier, this tasty Chilpachole de Jaiba (Spicy Crab Soup) will deliver both deliciousness and tons of flavor in just one bowl! This dish hails from the Gulf state of Veracruz. I will have you know it is our all-time most popular recipe. It has garnered thousands of visits to our blog.

Other very popular dish in the blog is Tamales. Our blog’s most popular tamal recipe is Easy Huskless Tamales. Dealing with the corn husks can be a bit time-consuming. This recipe frees you up from that task and let’s you focus on what really matters: eating the tamales fast. Now, if you don’t mind getting the husks ready, this one’s for you: Green Salsa and Chicken Tamales.

Know that there are two more tamal recipes coming your way soon, as they are a winter favorite in many Mexican households.
